What we've finally been waiting to hear (or read): Apple TV+. Will this surpass Netflix?

Apple TV+

The Apple Special Event finally took place on the afternoon of March 25th, and I’m here to tell you all about it. As with every big event, I’m about to divide this up into parts. Have you already read about Apple News+? What about the Apple Card? Maybe a little bit of Apple Arcade? I saved the best for last: Apple TV+.

We all knew this was coming, didn’t we? It’s actually the only thing we were technically looking forward to in this entire Apple Special Event. But it’s finally here, the Netflix for … for Apple? I don’t know.

What is Apple TV+?

Launching in the fall, Apple’s new subscription based streaming service will be home to brand new TV shows featuring the world’s (or America’s, anyway) leading celebrities. The list includes: Oprah, Steven Spielberg, Jennifer Aniston, Jason Momoa (still don’t know what you guys see in him, have you seen the Great Khali?), Steve Carrell, and a few others.

Of course, these will be accessible without ads, and whenever you want (on demand).

So in other words, you know how Netflix has “Netflix Original” TV shows or movies? Imagine that, but “Apple Original” instead, featuring the celebrities mentioned earlier, and about 20+ new shows for you to binge on, available exclusively through Apple TV+.

What about the Apple TV we know and love?

Apple TV+ layout

With Apple having launched the new Apple TV app (which you’re already familiar with), the layout is almost… similar to that of Netflix. But here’s the fun part.

Apple understands that what’s frustrating is having different streaming platforms for different streaming channels. If we want to watch Game of Thrones (which I still don’t get), why do we have to go to HBO GO? …So on and so forth for exclusive shows on exclusive channels.

With the new Apple TV app , you’ll be able to pay exclusively for the channels you want. HBO? Showtime? CBS All Access? Sports? News? Make your own package! Why do cable companies still charge us for 80 channels when all we need are 5?

Between you and me, you’re even going to be able to watch Amazon Prime Video and Hulu on this new app (all but Netflix. Coincidence? I think not).

Where can I use Apple TV+?

Apple TV+ preview

The new Apple TV app will be available not only on your iPhones, iPads, and obvious Apple TVs, but here’s where you might actually be excited. For the first time ever, Apple TV will be available on Macbooks as well!

To add to that, the Apple TV stand alone app will also be available for download (eventually…) on Samsung TVs, Amazon Fire TVs, LG, Roku, Sony, and VIZIO. They really went all out.

And lastly… Some fun facts.

Apple TV+ With Oprah

People are happy, but people are also angry. Here’s why.

  • Apple is expected to spend $2 billion on original content (miles behind from what Netflix is spending).
  • Apple TV+ will be ad-free and available offline as well, in over 100 countries.
  • We still don’t know what this is going to cost (but easily $10 or more).
  • There are tons of icons behind these TV shows, but we haven’t really seen many trailers yet.

And lastly, like in my other Apple Special Event posts, here’s a video.
